Cake Advice

Posted in: advice

After reading a Weddingbee post about what happened to a couple’s wedding cake, I was inspired to put together some cake advice.

  • Calculate your cake to guest ratio

Many places will do this for you, but if you’re ordering sheet cake, making your own, having family or friends provide it, you’ll want to make sure you aren’t returning home with 20lbs of leftover cake. (As yummy as it is) Wilton’s website is a great resource for this.

  • Designate a family member to save, wrap and freeze your top layer

Include instructions and materials so you get your cake and can eat it to. Of course, if you don’t want to save your top layer, let your coordinator, wedding party or whoever else know so you don’t hear “IS SHE SAVING THE TOP?” shouted over the reception.

  • Designate someone to save the cake cutters, cake stand and wedding topper

Of all the stuff that has to be carted back to your house these might be more sentimental. Most people are okay if they lost 10 tea lights, but have your coordinator or friend keep an eye out for these items.

  • Discuss a one-year replica for your anniversary with your baker

If you aren’t into having your cake frozen, see if your baker will do a one-year tier in the style of your wedding cake.

  • Plan for leftovers

Not everyone gets to eat their cake at their wedding (many, many, many don’t), so designate someone to bring and fill containers to send with the couple afterwards. Leftovers should also have a plan: donate, throwaway, save for next-day brunch, sent up to the bridal suite, given to a specific person to take home etc. Often times a lot of great cake gets wasted because there’s no plan.

12/20 Update! Liene over at Blue Orchid Designs also has some great cake advice. Check it out here.
